About Never Give Up Fitness and Founder Paul L. Barr: The Story Behind the Name and the Mission

Never Give Up Fitness was founded in Michigan by personal trainer Paul L. Barr, who built the business around a straightforward idea: exercise belongs in the care of people living with mental illness, not just people chasing a physique. This page preserves how the company started, who started it, and which of those principles the site carries forward today.

THE ORIGINAL MISSION

Who Never Give Up Fitness Is and What the Original Mission Statement Set Out to Do

Never Give Up Fitness customized training programs for people of every level of health and physical fitness, and specialized in personal fitness programs for individuals with mental and physical illness. The promise on the original site was short and unfussy: whatever your individual needs may be, we will create a plan that suits your lifestyle.

That sentence did more work than it looks like it does. Suiting a lifestyle means accounting for medication schedules, unpredictable energy, work shifts, transportation, and the weeks where getting through the door is the entire achievement. It is a different business model from selling a twelve-week transformation, and it was deliberate from the start.

What the company offered
Fitness testing and assessment
One-on-one personal training programs
Mental health exercise programs
Fitness boot camps
Special events, including the Summer Boot Camp Series
THE FOUNDER

Paul L. Barr and How a 1998 Diagnosis of OCD and Clinical Depression Became the Reason This Company Exists

In 1998, Paul was diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder and clinical depression. Regular exercise became part of his treatment, and it worked well enough that he decided other people should know about it. He described it as a natural treatment that deserved a place alongside the rest of the care someone receives, and he built a training business specifically so people managing an illness would have somewhere to go where that history was understood rather than politely ignored.

Paul disclosed all of this himself, publicly, on the company’s own website. That mattered commercially and it mattered clinically. Clients who had spent years being talked at by trainers with no reference point for what a depressive episode does to motivation were talking to someone who had lived on the other side of it. The company name was not marketing language. It was a description of what he was asking clients to do.

Alongside his fitness qualifications, Paul trained in suicide intervention and volunteered with the University of Michigan Depression Center. That combination of credentials, exercise science on one side and mental health response on the other, is unusual in personal training and it is the core of what made the original business credible.

HOW IT DEVELOPED

The Chapters of the Never Give Up Fitness Story, From a Personal Diagnosis to a Working Training Practice

1998
A diagnosis, and exercise enters the treatment plan

Paul is diagnosed with OCD and clinical depression. Structured, regular exercise becomes part of how he manages both, and the personal experience of that becomes the foundation of everything that follows.

QUALIFYING
Formal certification rather than enthusiasm alone

Paul completes personal training certification through NPTI, adds group fitness and suspension training qualifications, and takes nutrition and emergency response training. Working with medically complex clients meant the credentials had to come before the client roster.

FOUNDING
Never Give Up Fitness opens in southeast Michigan

The company launches with a stated specialty in training people with mental and physical illness, offering assessment, one-on-one programs, mental health exercise programs, and boot camps under one roof.

2011
A client crosses a half marathon finish line

Paul documents a client’s preparation for the Detroit Free Press Half Marathon on video, week by week. The client finishes the race in a time of three hours and fifteen minutes. Not a competitive time, and completely beside the point. It was a first half marathon by someone who had not been a runner, which is exactly the kind of result this business was built to produce.

COMMUNITY WORK
Suicide intervention training and volunteering in depression research

Paul becomes ASIST certified and volunteers with the University of Michigan Depression Center, extending the work past the gym floor and into the community health side of the same problem.

QUALIFICATIONS

The Fitness and Nutrition Certifications Paul L. Barr Held While Operating Never Give Up Fitness

These are the credentials listed on the original Never Give Up Fitness website. They are recorded here as company history, in the form the founder published them.

CertificationWhat That Qualification Covers
NPTI Certified Personal Fitness TrainerAnatomy, exercise physiology, program design, and supervised hands-on coaching hours through the National Personal Training Institute.
A-CPT Advanced Certified Personal TrainerAn advanced personal training credential covering programming beyond entry level, listed by Paul alongside his primary certification.
AFAA Primary Group Fitness InstructorGroup exercise instruction: class design, cueing, and running safe progressions for a room full of mixed abilities at once.
TRX Suspension Training CourseSuspension trainer coaching, where load is adjusted by changing body angle rather than adding weight. Useful for deconditioned and post-injury clients.
TRX Group Suspension Training CourseThe same system applied to group sessions, with scaling options so beginners and regulars can work side by side.
NPTI Certified Nutrition ConsultantNutrition guidance within a trainer’s scope of practice, which is general education and habit coaching rather than medical nutrition therapy.
MENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY TRAINING

Suicide Intervention Training, Emergency Response Certification, and Community Involvement Beyond the Gym

Training people who live with mental illness raises situations that an exercise qualification does not prepare anyone for. Paul went and got trained for those situations separately, which is the part of his background that set the company apart from a general personal training service.

Training or RoleWhat It Involves
ASIST certifiedApplied Suicide Intervention Skills Training, a two-day workshop in recognizing when someone is at risk, staying with that conversation, and connecting the person to appropriate help.
American Red Cross Adult CPR and AEDEmergency cardiac response, including use of a defibrillator, which is baseline competence for anyone supervising exertion in medically complex clients.
American Red Cross Standard First AidInjury and medical emergency response on site, before professional help arrives.
University of Michigan Depression Center volunteerVolunteer involvement with a major academic depression research and treatment center, keeping the business connected to the clinical world it operated alongside.
PAUL IN THE PRESS

Media Appearances and Video Work Where Paul Barr Talked About Exercise and Mental Illness

Community Corner television segment

Paul appeared on the community program to discuss how exercise can help people living with a mental illness, taking the argument outside the fitness industry and into a general audience.

Detroit Free Press Half Marathon series

A video series following one client through preparation for the 2011 race, published as the training happened rather than edited into a highlight reel afterward.

Consumer education videos

Short pieces on what to look for when hiring a personal trainer, what a sound weight loss program looks like, and training outdoors versus training in a gym.

TODAY

Where Never Give Up Fitness Stands Now and How the Original Work Is Being Carried Forward

The Never Give Up Fitness domain lapsed and has since been taken over by new ownership. Paul L. Barr founded and built the original business, and the history on this page belongs to him. He is not involved in the operation of this site, and nothing published here should be read as his statement or his endorsement.

What is being kept is the reason the company existed in the first place. The founding premise, that people managing mental and physical illness deserve fitness programming built for their circumstances rather than adapted grudgingly from someone else’s, has aged well and is worth continuing.

THE PREMISE

Illness is not a reason to be excluded from training. It is a reason for the training to be designed properly, by someone who understands what they are working with.

THE STANDARD

Assessment before prescription, credentials before clients, and a clear line between fitness coaching and the clinical care that belongs to licensed providers.

THE NAME

Never Give Up was chosen by someone describing his own recovery. It is a reminder that a missed week is a normal feature of this work, not a failure to be punished.

Never Give Up Fitness provides fitness training. It does not provide medical care, psychiatric treatment, psychotherapy, or nutrition therapy, and nothing on this page is clinical advice. Exercise can be a valuable part of managing a mental or physical health condition, and it works best as one component of care directed by qualified healthcare professionals, never as a replacement for treatment.
